Built in 1939, Wyvernwood Garden Apartments is a residential complex that spans more than 70 acres in Historic Los Angeles neighborhood of Boyle Heights. It was the first large-scale garden apartment complex in Los Angeles backed by the Federal Housing Administration (FHA). It has been determined eligible for listing in the National Register of Historic Places.
The Wyvernwood Garden Apartments is a successful example of architecture designed to provide affordable housing while building community. Wyvernwood’s close-knit community, with family ties spanning generations, has shaped its unique sense of place.
In January 2008, owner Fifteen Group announced plans for a $2 billion, 4,400-unit mixed-use project that would quadruple the site’s density and significantly impair Wyvernwood’s historic layout and park-like setting.
Residents have expressed opposition to the complex’s demolition, attesting to the site’s cultural and architectural significance. 6,000 residents are in jeopardy of losing the place they call HOME. Let’s spread the word and help the thousands of families from Wyvernwood!
